Neck Pain: What Causes Neck Pain?

Your neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small vertebrae.

Incredibly, the cervical spine supports the full weight of your head, which is on average about 12 pounds. While the cervical spine can move your head in nearly every direction, this flexibility makes the neck very susceptible to pain and injury.

The neck’s susceptibility to injury is due in part to biomechanics. Activities and events that affect cervical biomechanics include extended sitting, repetitive movement, accidents, falls and blows to the body or head, and everyday wear and tear. Many treatments for neck pain are ineffective and similar to low back pain. There are many unnecessary surgeries performed every year.

Neck fusion surgeries generally have a very poor outcome and can lead to more significant pain and disability. Fortunately, the doctors at Fox Integrated Healthcare may have a solution to your neck pain.

Once it is determined that you are a candidate for the treatment programs that we offer, you can be on your way to a pain-free life in a relatively short time.

We're here to help you get rid of neck pain fast & effectively.

Neck Pain: The Symptoms Associated with Neck Pain

Neck pain can feel like any of the following:

- Stiff neck feeling that makes turning the head difficult and painful
- Sharp or stabbing pain feeling in one spot

- Soreness or tenderness in a general area of pain

- Pain that radiates from the neck down into the shoulders, arms or fingers; or radiates up into the head area

Neck Pain: Neck Pain Caused by Conditions in Daily Life

Poor posture, obesity, and weak abdominal muscles often disrupt spinal balance, causing the neck to bend forward to compensate.

Stress and emotional tension can cause muscles to tighten and contract, resulting in pain and stiffness.

Postural stress can contribute to chronic neck pain with symptoms extending into the upper back and the arms.

Neck Pain: Neck Pain as a Result of Aging

Degenerative disorders such as osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease directly affect the spine. Osteoarthritis, a common joint disorder, causes progressive deterioration of cartilage.

The body reacts by forming bone spurs that affect joint motion. This is often due to an abnormal neck curve, a history of trauma to the head or neck and poor biomechanics.

Spinal stenosis causes the small nerve passageways in the vertebrae to narrow, compressing and trapping nerve roots. Stenosis may cause neck, shoulder, and arm pain, as well as numbness, when these nerves are unable to function normally.

Degenerative disc disease can cause reduction in the elasticity and height of intervertebral discs. Over time, a disc may bulge or herniate, causing tingling, numbness, and pain that runs into the arm.

Neck Pain: Neck Pain Caused by Accidents or Injury

A sudden forced movement of the head or neck in any direction and the resulting “rebound” in the opposite direction is known as whiplash. The sudden “whipping” motion injures the surrounding and supporting tissues of the neck and head. This traumatic motion can actually alter the normal shape of the neck, leading to dysfunction sometimes-even months after the accident.

Muscles react by tightening and contracting, creating muscle fatigue, which can result in pain and stiffness. Severe whiplash can also be associated with injury to the intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerve roots.

Car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash. Most medical professionals will only look to make sure there is no immediate life threatening problems such as fracture.

The altered shape of the neck is missed and the patient can have an increased risk of pain and disability over time. At Fox Integrated Healthcare we will do a thorough examination to determine the cause of your neck pain.

Neck Pain: Neck Pain Caused by Whiplash

Millions of motor vehicle accidents (MVA) occur each year, many with serious consequences. The main symptom is pain in the neck or upper back that can develop immediately or take days, weeks, and sometimes months.

A partial list of possible symptoms (symptoms of each injured person are different) includes:

- Muscle Spasms

- Lost Motion

- Headache

- Dizziness

- Loss of Concentration and / or Memory

- Difficulty Chewing and / or Swallowing

- Hoarseness in the voice

- Burning, Tingling or Radiating pain in the Shoulder / Arm / Hand, and more

Because these symptoms can worsen conditions and disrupt the healing ability of your body it is important to find the right doctor to achieve pain relief and ensure your insurance covers your medical expenses.

Fox Integrated Healthcare provides an alternative to “hit and miss” whiplash pain treatments.

We offer a non-surgical, comprehensive approach to ailments specific to motor vehicle accidents. We have combined a unique non-surgical approach with a collection of some of the most advanced pain relief technology and protocols available at any clinic in the state.

And to make sure that we are not just another disappointment in your life, like all of the failed treatments you have already tried, we have designed a very non-invasive and extensive pre-treatment evaluation system that allows us to help determine who is an IDEAL candidate for our treatment (likely to respond well) and those who are not ideal (not likely to respond well).

This pre-treatment evaluation system will allow you to know BEFORE you undergo treatment whether you are likely to respond and saves you both time and disappointment if our pre-treatment evaluation determines you are not a good fit.

Neck Pain: Could Neck Pain Be Serious?

While neck pain usually goes away on its own or from a few visits from your chiropractor there are some instances where it could be more serious.

Some symptoms associated with neck pain could indicate the health of a nerve root or the spinal cord is at risk, or perhaps there is an underlying disease or infection.

Symptoms associated with neck pain, which could be more serious, include:

- Tingling, numbness, or weakness that radiates into the shoulder, arms, or fingers

- Trouble with gripping or lifting objects

- Problems with walking, balance, or coordination

- Loss of bladder or bowel control

Severe neck pain from a trauma, such as a car crash or falling down steps, needs emergency care.
